I think social networking is good and also bad. I think it's good because people can connect with friends, family, etc. around the world without physically being with them. They can see pictures of each other and see what each other are up to. Social networking can also be bad because it can become very addictive and people can creep other peoples information.
I think facebook kind of changed society because people, like i already said, can connect with eachother and share information.. and i didnt see the movie
There are few benefits to Social Networking nowadays, and far more issues to it. The prime purpose of connecting with those around you is both neglected and abused at different times, leading it to become quite an issue.
For ease of reading, I have separated this into three parts.
Part 1) Anonymity
Take, for example, Facebook's new "check me in" system. How is this possibly a good idea on any level? You are now able to tell anyone on the internet who can access your profile that you are now at this location. This now draws the line between cyber stalking and real stalking. With social networking, information about a person is at your fingertips! And the argument of not being a person's friend = not being able to see their information is invalid, as there are many ways to bypass Facebook's "Secure" system. For example, blocked users can easily see the blockee's profile by sending a java request to list all details including the denied listing (set as a boolean array of facebook ID's).
With the likes of Facebook, you can find a lot of their information, even if you don't know them. It adds a whole new level to cyber stalking and security fraud. I could easily pretend to be someone's friend having never met them. I could easily steal information and be someone I am not. Hell, password resets can be guessed giving a lot of a person's information released through comments. And stalking people online is easier when you have social networking. You can discover their email address, or handle/username online; and through the likes of google or pipl trace their online accounts.
Part 2) Person Aspect
Alright, so I covered the negatives of general security; now for a more personal aspect.
the likes of Facebook, MySpace, or even Twitter generally seem to give rise to what appears to be over-inflated egos. You have people constantly posting about what food they just ate, how drunk they were the night before, or small little anecdotes that nobody truly cares about; and yet it still draws attention. It is leading every small thing to be treated as though it is an important matter, and is only causing people to believe that their insignificant actions are actually important. It's all become very self-centered in the way that it's being made; pictures of yourself, talking about yourself, etc; and expecting people to praise you for it. Not only that, people will haze each other through either direct attacks or macro-comments for everyone to read. It adds a new level to social humiliation (and pranks as well which can be humiliating depending how they are performed). It provides, on a personal scale, means to group against each other with hate groups, or release personal images/information about people that were never meant to be seen by others.
And now finally, for why it is bad collectively. Aside from the reasons stated above (which apply collectively as well), it also supplies means for coordination for some not-so-appropriate actions. I'm sure I need not remind everyone of the Egypt issue; using Facebook for coordinated protests. It also, along with the bloated-ego issue, seems to cause a multitude of "faux-activists"; that is to say, people who wish to make a difference, and yet gain self-pride in not truly achieving anything. This is also due to the social stigma from today's society in that kids today want to try to make a difference. However, instead of applying their true potential to anything, they settle on small insignificant "grouping together" acts which do not actually -help- anyone, other than showing support. This is not so much a cynical view as it is a logical view. Take, for example, the different color shirt days. There are no funds being raised (even the pink shirt days funds are being raised for a well in india (where that connection was made, I will never know) instead of going toward the cause it's said to support) through these, and all it is doing is showing people support the cause in raising awareness. However, in order to raise awareness you need to understand what the actual shirt represents (being that they are not using colors that represent the issue (pink=/= bullying (it represents breast cancer), red=/=suicide (except in star trek it = death), purple=/= homosexuality (it represents nobility or domestic abuse)). And thus; an issue is born. An endless logical loop where to understand what you are raising awareness for, you need to understand the campaign, meaning that it's just as effective as telling someone of the issue by mouth (in terms of raising awareness). However, with group mentality put into play through the likes of this social networking, everyone seems to believe that a change has been made, leading to and overinflated ego over an issue that has not been resolved. These people need to take a step back and get a firm grasp of reality and realize the ways that their desire to help can be put into an effective manner rather than slacking off (or being a "slacktivist", if you prefer). Another example of this overinflated ego involves changing your display picture to that of a cartoon to stop child abuse. ... I seriously hope to god I don't have to explain why that one is stupid.
My point: The groups give opportunity to coordinate against one another, and over-inflate each other's ego thereby causing people to not reach their full potential (seriously, I can't stress enough how donating a little bit of money, or raising money and donating the proceeds would do far more than just wearing a shirt would)
CLOSING
tl;dr social networking is bad. People have become egotistical/self-centered as a result of it.
By Paige Wilkinson For this generation that I live in, technology basically runs our life. I can see socail networking in both positive and negitive ways.
Social networking allows people to communicate more freely and easier. Though this could be good and bad. People could start talking to random strangers and could result in danger. On the other hand, I can keep up with family and friends from my homwtown, six hours away, just by loging in. Its fast and simple - like the way the world works now a days. Another problem some (but not all) people can have the tendency to lack in social contact face-to-face. Not everyone is like this, but some people find it easier to run thier mouth about people through a screen but can't say it to their actual face. I think facebook has chaned our society, like stated pervious, positivly and negitively.
Sandy McGill I think that social netwoerk is good because it lets us keep in touch with our friends and family that live in other parts of the world, and can give a person a chance to be someone else. it is a freedom tool and very effective for what it was created for. I also think that it has gone too far. We now now when someone blows their nose, or had a shower! it's a little extreme and sometimes things like social networking get people in trouble... But in the end the good outshines the bad!
I think social networking is a good thing, it helps us interact with eachother faster than we ever could. It changed socitey because now we can know what others are doing all the time and communicate with other people on the other side of the world way easyier than we could before social networking.
Name: Alex Glecoff I think social networking is a good thing. I think this basically because it has increased the speed of society. Now things can be communicated with a click of a button, and can be recived instantly. I also thnk it's a good thing because you can remain in contact with old friends no matter how far away they are.
katie featherstone Yes, i think facebook changed society because before it started you couldnt really talk to anyone across the world or your old friends from high school or camp, you could talk on the phone but sometimes you dont know their phone number, or you don't know where they live, or if their last name changed. Facebook created a world where people can talk all the time, you can talk to people in Europe, Russia, easier then before, you don't have to wait for the right time to call them, because of the time change. Facebook changed society in a big and better way. People wouldnt be in touch as much as they are now a days!
Nathan Reynolds I think thats social networking can be a good and a bad thing because it alowes people to keep in contact whith others when they are on the other side of the world but it also can make people not even go and visit anyone because the can just text them or chat with them on the internet.
Chad i believe social networking has its ups, and its downs. The connectability between distance family members and friends is astounding. Talking to my grandmother when she goes to Florida has never been easier. It makes contacting people much easier now that the cell phone and social networking have combined to form mobile social networking. If you dont have their cell phone number, you'll probably have their email. The downfalls of social netwroking arent extremely bad, but are definitely an impact on its overall good. "Cyber bullying" has been created due to the computer. Predators can access childrens whereabouts even faster than ever before. These are two big things that we must keep an eye out for. It can also be very addicting for some -- liking statuses until 3 am in the morning. I belive social networking has helped society but also done some wrong.
I personaly loved the movie, I thought it was interesting and taught society alot. I believe that facebook itself has changed society as a whole, mostly in a good way. It allows public to interact with people from around the world, bringing people closer. People are able to post comments, pictures, among other things. Facebook is a fun way to communicate freely to anyone around the word. Although there are many positive sides to facebook, it can also consume people and control their life. Some people become so drawn to fb that they concentrate less on their social skills as it no longer becomes a priotity to stay in touch with people on the phone or in person. It is just easier to communitcate over social networking, whether it is good or bad, I'm inbetween.
I think social networking has both positive and negative effects. With just a click of a button you can connect to friends, and family that you barely see.It can be helpful that way, you can connect with people that you havent seen in years. However other people can see your information that can become personal sometimes, theres always the danger that comes with social networks. Yes, i think facebook has changed our society a lot of people have come dependent on technology. Our world now is more technological then it was a few years ago, its just the way society is now.
I think facebook is both good and bad. It has changed society so much; people have become addicted to facebook and check it regularly. Some people spend their time on facebook, rather than doing their homework. But its also good for connecting with family and friends that don’t live near you. You are able to keep up with them by creeping their profiles, checking their status’ and their photo updates. The worst thing facebook is used for though is bullying. People are able to post rude comments on facebook, and message people.
Johnny Cutting i believe that social networking is a good thing, but only to a certain point. their are the obvious positives to having facebook; you can keep in touch with friends, it's free, its fun, and a good way to pass around information. if social networking is used solely for these purposes then there should never be any problems with it and it can only be a good thing. the issue is that not everyone uses it for these purposes. people are making fake accounts and giving people death threats and bullying and using it for marketing purposes... i also liked the movie
I hate to be "that guy", but a few people have made the reoccurring argument that it has made communication faster, and this is only half-true. Since the internet first caught on, there were many online conversations which worked quite fast (It could be argued even faster, because all it sent were strings of text rather than graphics as well; as back then everything was console)
And thus, stating that social-networking has done that is a fallacy. The only truth in it is that it is easier to connect to the specific person you want to, however, that can still be done with instant messaging systems/protocols which work at a far faster rate without the added data transfer of graphics or excessive web-code interpreting. The only difference is one does not generally allow for people to notify everyone on every little thing they have done in the day.
Niki White I think social networking has definitely changed society in a good way. Because of social networking, the world has been brought together. People can now communicate more efficiently. Facebook allows people to keep in touch with people from their past, present and also their future. Many people use facebook as tool for keeping up with the latest news and viewing the latest pictures. Facebook can be addictive, but everyone has his or her own priorities, and in life, everyone needs to figure out how to properly balance them… I saw half of the movie… it was interesting and good but I was pretty tired and ended up falling asleep.
I think that social networking can be good and bad depending on things. It's good for staying connected to people that live far away and to stay connected with old friends and stuff. but it can also be a problem in some cases. like bullying and stuff and people who just mess around with other people becasue they're big through a computer screen. Facebook did cahnce society everyone pretty much uses it. and I never saw the movie
ben hill i think social networking is good and also bad. I think it's good because people can connect with friends, family, around the world without physically being with them. They can see pictures of each other and see what each other are up to. Social networking can also be bad because it can become very addictive and people can look other peoples information
